The Open Fold—Adult Children of Alcoholics
Written by a World Service Office staff member, this reprint asserts that, ‘Al-Anon is for people – people who have a problem they want to solve by sharing their experience, strength and hope with other people; the more varied the membership, the broader the opportunity to share recovery.’
The whole article discusses in particular the problems adult children of alcoholics experience having a founding relationship to Al-Anon Family Groups. It posits the “adult child” (child of one or more drinking parents) as someone whose life has been profoundly affected by the atmosphere and/or alcohol-affected behaviours experienced while growing up. To do that most effectively it also lends from the Introduction provided in the pamphlet, Al-Anon Sharings from Adult Children (P-47), to help set the scene for what is called “identification” inside Al-Anon meetings: one member’s lived experiences are highly relatable to the next person’s own experiences.
